फेडररला या स्पर्धेचा संभाव्य विजेता समजले जात होते. फेडरर यावेळी जेतेपद पटकावून हॅट्ट्रिक साजरी करेल, असे चाहत्यांना वाटत होते. पण या स्पर्धेच्या चौथ्याच फेरीत त्याला पराभवाचा सामना करावा लागला. चौथ्या फेरीतील पहिला सेट फेडररने जिंकला होता. पण त्यानंतर त्याने सलग तीन सेट गमावले आणि त्याचे या स्पर्धेतील आव्हान संपुष्टात आले.
